Want to be a pawn star?

How have recent TV shows such as pawn stars and storage hunters made you think about your possessions and pawning them?

Before the rise in popularity of TV shows such as Pawn Stars, Storage Hunters and Storage Wars, pawnbroking was considered by many (including me) as something that I would never be interested in either because I have nothing valuable enough to pawn or because I was simply clueless about the whole pawnbroking industry.

Since these three shows and others like it have begun, pawnbroking has become more popular than ever and not just with those who were already really familiar with it but among those of us who were outsiders.

Storage Hunters follows a group of people as they travel the country from auction to auction where they bet their own money in hopes that they will earn even bigger returns. If I had to pick a favourite out of the three TV shows, Pawn Stars, Storage Hunters or Storage Wars I would have to go with Pawn stars which is an American reality television series. It is a great show and as a huge fan of reality TV shows, Pawn Stars was the perfect new series for me to get stuck into.

The series itself follows the staff’s interactions with customers who come in to pawn or sell their possessions. It is interesting to find out the historical background of some of the objects that the customers bring in as well as the occasional conflict between the cast, but who doesn’t love a bit of drama?

The competition in the show makes it quite addictive and entertaining and the show has had me snooping around my house in hopes to find something that might bring in a little extra cash. I managed to come across some jewellery such as old necklaces and bracelets that I never wear anymore because they never seem to go with anything.

However, I decided to give the pawnbroking scene a go and with inspiration from all of my favourite TV shows. I pawned my old jewellery and managed to get a lot more money for them than I thought I would.

Trading my jewellery to Albemarle Bond, which is currently one of the UK’s largest pawnbrokers and jewellers, I earned enough to book myself a little summer getaway.
