This news summary on the tenth 21st Century season of Doctor Who will be updated regularly as more details are revealed.

Episode 9: ‘The Empress of Mars’

Written by Mark Gatiss.

Directed by Wayne Yip.

Mark Gatiss: “It’s time to welcome back sssssssome old friends. I’m bring back the Ice Warriors, again! One of my favourite monsters. It’s a thrill-a-minute – a sort of Bank Holiday Monday feel, a kind of Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs story of derring-do, which I’ve always loved But it has a new twist! There is a new Ice Warrior in it, a different kind of Ice Warrior.”

Mark Gatiss: “Steven’s asked me if I’ll write a sequel [to ‘Sleep No More’] – I’ll see if I can do that. If I can think of one, I would certainly like to do it, because I think the idea is good and the monsters are great.”

Episode 10: ‘The Eaters of Light’

Written by Rona Munro.

Directed by Charles Palmer.

Guest starring Rebecca Benson as Kar, Daniel Kerr as BanJuwon Adedokun, Brian Vernel, Ben Hunter, as ThraciusAaron Phagura, Sam Adewunmi and Billy Matthews as Cornelius.

Steven Moffat: “Yes, Rona’s back, and it’s about time! [Her episode is] old meets new. And it’s warm and wise and lyrical and Scottish – not unlike Rona herself.”

Rona Munro: “Writing ‘Survival’ was my dream job, but it was a mournful time in the show’s history. This has been a very different experience. There’s more of everything; people, resources, confidence…”

Rona Munro: “When I was very small and watching the First Doctor, I had a special cushion known as ‘Rona’s Doctor Whocushion’. I would hide my face in it when the Daleks or other monsters appeared on screen! ‘The Eaters of Light’ is my version of other stories that have haunted me for almost as long.”

Christmas 2017 special

Doctor Who Christmas

Airs on Monday 25 December 2017.

Written by Steven Moffat.

Peter Capaldi’s Doctor will regenerate in this episode.

The Mirror: “Doctor Who will have a unique time travelling companion in the Christmas Special – in the shape of [David Bradey as the First Doctor].”

Peter Capaldi: “[The regeneration is] more complicated than that. There’s this notion now that it’s the same process he’s gone through every time, and that’s not true. It’s only the last couple of regenerations that have been, as it were, fairly straightforward ones.”

Steven Moffat: “Like Peter [Capaldi], I’m facing up to leaving the best job I’ll ever have, but knowing I do so in the company of the best, and kindest and cleverest of men, makes the saddest of endings a little sweeter.”

Steven Moffat: “The departure of a showrunner doesn’t mean anything to the audience. Most of the audience doesn’t know that I exist, so they’d go blank if I attempted to wave goodbye to them. Oh, the embarrassment that would be. So I’m damned if I’m imposing my departure on the show.”

Steven Moffat: “I just want to do a good one, before I hand over to Chris [Chibnall].”
