5 of the most disastrous weddings in ‘Doctor Who’

Posted Filed under

Here are five of the worst weddings in the Whoniverse – and, as it’s nearly Valentine’s Day, one which actually turned out fine…

Sarah Jane Smith and Peter Dalton in ‘The Wedding of Sarah Jane’

The Sarah Jane Adventures The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith

Not all Doctor Who weddings are fixable, though, as Sarah Jane’s should-have-been special day in The Sarah Jane Adventures attests to.

After finally meeting the man of her dreams, Sarah Jane rushed into marriage with the suave Peter Dalton – only for him to turn out to be a puppet of the Trickster. Thanks to some help from the Tenth Doctor, the world was saved, but Peter died in the process.

This is surely the most heart-breaking of all Whoniverse weddings. After all that time saving the world, Sarah deserved a chance at happiness. Sorry, we’ve just got something in our eye…

The Doctor and River Song in ‘The Wedding of River Song’

Doctor Who the Wedding of River Song

If all his companions’ weddings had gone wrong, naturally the Doctor’s own marriage would be equally troublesome.

Trapped in a disintegrating version of reality caused by a fixed point in time being altered, the Doctor ties the knot – literally – with River so that the universe can be put back on track. Oh, and he was hidden inside a robot duplicate of himself at the time. Not exactly the most conventional of wedding days for Mr and Mrs Who.

Likewise, the Tenth Doctor’s marriage to Queen Elizabeth I in ‘The Day of the Doctor’ occurred during a centuries-spanning Zygon takeover of Earth. It was also something of a begrudging affair for the Doctor. Though he seemed all for it when he thought she was a Zygon…

Honourable mention: The Ponds in  ‘The Big Bang’

Doctor Who Amy Pond Rory wedding Karen Gillan Arthur Darvill

Amy and Rory must be the only Doctor Who couple to have their big day improved by sci-fi shenanigans (beautiful word, shenanigans).

Firstly, the Doctor’s rebooting of the universe allowed Amy to have her wonderfully-named parents, Augustus and Tabitha Pond, there on the day (never to be seen again though, so maybe the reunion didn’t go that well).

Then – thanks to a memory-jogging gift left by River – Amy was able to call her best friend back into reality so he could enjoy the wedding too… and teach everyone how to do the ‘drunk giraffe.’
