As we approach its tenth anniversary, why don’t you remind yourselves of a few of the most heartbreaking moments in Russell T Davies’ era of Doctor Who

7) “You’re my daughter, and we’ve only just got started. You’re going to be great. You’re going to be more than great. You’re going to be amazing.”

Doctor Who The Doctors Daughter Jenny

The Doctor has lived to see his home and family be taken away from him.

6) “Come on. It can’t end like this. You and me, all the things we’ve done. Axons. Remember the Axons? And the Daleks. We’re the only two left. I’ve no one else. Regenerate!”

Doctor Who The Master John Simm

The Master might be The Doctor’s age-old enemy, but considering he’s the only other known Time Lord in the universe, it’s understandable that The Doctor’s rather devastated as he holds his dying body in his arms.

Can’t live with him, can’t live without him.

5) “I’m John Smith. That’s all I want to be. John Smith. With his life and his job. And his love. Why can’t I be John Smith?”

Doctor Who The Family of Blood Joan

In ‘The Family of Blood’, Martha faces the problem of ‘how the hell am I going to make the Doctor change back from a human into a Time Lord?’ In the end, John Smith is more heroic than the Doctor himself, sacrificing a beautiful future in order to revive some mad alien he doesn’t know.

There goes your happy ever after, Doctor.
