What are the best streaming services in the UK?

With so many options to stream movies and TV online, what are the best choices?

In 2016, it would be fair to say that the Friday night trip to rent a DVD is now a nostalgic thing of the past.

No longer do we trudge down to the ancient video store, complete with dog-eared posters and cardboard cut-outs from some obscure ’80s action flick, and scan through the aisles looking for something we’d like to watch (with a few VHS tapes in a bargain bin the corner).

Thankfully, now we can rest on our couches with popcorn, sweets, and fizzy drinks already in hand and then scroll through the thousands of titles available in today’s streaming platforms…

VOD

Short for Video On Demand, VOD is a great service for movies and TV if your tastes are a little more left of mainstream. With more of a focus on B movies, anime, and cult classics, VOD works by purchasing packages by the minute, meaning you can simply save money if you stop watching something you’re not interested in.

The service is also making use of new online prepaid cards like this, if you’re not one for using credit or debit cards.

Netflix

So famous they even have a euphemism named after them, Netflix is arguably the world’s biggest online streaming service for TV and movies. With more than 70 million members in over 190 countries across the world, it’s hard to beat the range and price of Netflix.

What’s more, the ability to simultaneously watch on a laptop, TV, phone, or tablet (so four family members could watch in different rooms, if necessary) and the option of a free trial for the first month, means that Netflix should be top of your list if you’re a serial TV and movie fan.

TalkTalkTV

Formerly going by the name of blinkbox, TalkTalkTV works somewhat differently to Netflix, in that there is no subscription service as such, instead you merely pay for what you want to watch on a case-by-case basis.

Renting a new release movie will set you back around £3.49, while buying a TV episode will cost you at least £1.89, although the best choice for TV would simply be to buy the series for roughly £5.99. The range is generally as good as Netflix, containing a catalogue of over 8,000 films with new releases constantly updated.
