So it’s all over. Watford’s winged wonder Paul has successfully sent all the Fades off to heaven, hell or wherever they’re supposed to be going now they’re dead and the world has been saved. Everyone can live happily ever after, and… oh… no, that’s not what happened at all.
Yes, the Fades have all ascended (except Big Bad John, of whom more anon) thanks to Paul’s angelic intervention, but the world hasn’t been saved and nobody is living happily ever after. Jay isn’t living at all, of course, having had her brains splattered on an arcade pavement by nutty Neil, who is slumped in a stairwell, gurning miserably at the swirling, stormy sky above and moaning, ‘I told him: don’t fuck with ascension.’
Meanwhile, Paul himself, having fucked with ascension and found it wasn’t, perhaps, the best solution after all, is blubbering helplessly on the top deck of a multi-storey car park with his sister and best friend as darkness descends over the suburbs. It’s pretty far from over; it’s not the end. It simply can’t be.
Whether BBC Three are planning a follow-up run or not, Jack Thorne hasn’t so much left the door open for Series 2 as torn it off and left a photograph of a kitten hanging above the gaping doorway with ‘RECOMMISSION THE FADES OR THE CAT GETS IT’ scrawled on it in red capitals.
There’s so much left unresolved – namely the fate of the world, but also the whereabouts of evil John, who didn’t burst into dozens of white doves like the other Fades but exploded into an unkindness of ravens; he’ll almost certainly be back – that it isn’t a case of a few loose ends that need tidying up; there’s still a huge wodge of story left to be told.
Will we see Paul leading Mac, Anna and his doting mother on a crusade to find John and kick his ass once and for all? Will we see John eating his way through the Earth’s population to get back and rip Paul’s wings off? Will Mac ever stop blathering about his various boxsets? And will Anna just stop being such a bitch?
