The two non-Doctor Who blockbuster movies with Daleks in them!

Spoilers ahead, as we look at two big Hollywood movies that managed to sneak Daleks in!

In the 1960s, the Daleks made their debut on the big screen, in the Peter Cushing-headlined Doctor Who movies. But since then, they’ve stayed – along with the Doctor – on television screens. Well, with two exceptions.

The best known was this year’s The LEGO Batman Movie, where – amidst a host of appearances from non-Batman villains – a bunch of “British robots” are introduced. Here are all the Dalek appearances in the film…

Note that they’re the Victory Of The Daleks multi-coloured Daleks that appear in the movie. We wondered where they’d got to.

But if you go a little further back, to 2003, the Daleks also turned up in the film Looney Tunes: Back In Action. This is a film that Warner Bros had high hopes for, earmarking it as a potential blockbuster. It was from Joe Dante, the director of Gremlins, and it brought Looney Tunes animated characters into a world of live action actors, led by Brendan Fraser and Steve Martin.

Yet in the midst of the film, this happens…

The $80m film is good fun, but it never caught on with audiences (and certainly didn’t repeat the box office performance of Space Jam!), taking just $20.9m in America, and $68.5m in total. But it’s worth seeking out, not least for the appearance of our favourite pepperpots…
