Is online bingo underutilised on TV?

Granted, there was the National Bingo Night show on ABC back in 2007 which was hosted by Ed Sanders and lasted just six episodes, and then Bingo America on GSN that run for about six months and was fronted by Richard Karn and Diane Mizota, but the popularity of online bingo has not be utilised to such a successful extend on TV shows.

But in the few instances it has been used, albeit in its traditional land based form, bingo has managed to generate some great laughs over the years.

Back in 1992, during the fourth season of the Roseanne show, in episode 13 entitled ‘Bingo’, the lead character decides to join Crystal and Jackie to a gals’ night out of bingo. While she was originally reluctant to play bingo, after winning $50, she gets hooked on this great pastime. It goes without saying that the laughs generated when she gets into an argument with a fellow player are legendary and worth checking out on YouTube.

More recently, in the now cancelled NBC show Go On, in an episode called ‘Double Down’, Matthew Perry’s character ends up playing a game of bingo in a church, which results in some funny moments as Perry’s character involves everyone from his therapy group into his addiction.

Finally, in a recent episode of TLC’s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Mama June decides to play for her chance to win a $1,000 jackpot. In the episode she says: ‘they say it’s an old person’s sport, but I don’t think so,’ and she is absolutely right. According to a report released by bingofind.com, 25% of bingo players are in the age group of 35-49, making them the ideal candidates for advertisers looking to promote their products on television. So next time you hear a friend or a relative say that bingo is for old people, then kindly ask them to think again.
