Stressful, Riveting, Glued to the Handmaids Tale

If like me, you couldn’t wait for the return of Channel 4’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ second season, then you will probably agree with me that it served up a brilliant, if distressing first episode.

Remember the end of the first series, when June (played by Elisabeth Moss) is in the back of the black van? Well, the second series picks right up where the first left off with that black van taking her to a warehouse then on to a baseball field, where June along with dozens of other Handmaids were brutally gagged, then made to climb gallows and stand with nooses about their necks.

This moment was terrible and the only thing that kept me sane right then was thinking that if they did away with June then what was the point of a new series? Watching one girl pee herself through fright and see those moments that the girls thought they were going to die was heart-breaking.

To be honest, when Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd) began to recite the Lord’s Prayer revealing that this was simply a reminder that Gilead is the real boss, I didn’t know whether to swear or be happy.

Mind you, although June escaped stove burns for refusing to stone fellow Handmaid Janine (played by Madeleine Brewer) not all the other girls were so lucky. Watching a girl handcuffed to a stove, the click of the ignition and then the screams were truly distressing, and I could almost smell the burning flesh.

This brutally cold series that treats fertile women in such a way culminated its first episode with Jen escaping from a Doctor’s Office (where her unborn child had been scanned) and finally meeting up with her real baby daddy Nick (played by Max Minghella). It was with some satisfaction that I witness the burning of the red dress, together with cringing as June cuts the Handmaid marker out of her ear.

So why is ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ so addictive?

Well, for one, it’s brilliantly acted and directed, and this combination makes it compelling viewing. The storyline where its Motherhood or death in a chilling man’s world allows us who watch run the gamut of emotions from rage to utter despair., and that is what makes this series addictive, terribly so.

I have to admit after watching this first episode of ‘The Handmaids Tale’ that I sat for a few minutes thinking about why I was watching misogyny of such a level, and I needed something to shake me out of the mood I was now in.

Luckily not only I am an avid fan of this series I am also an avid gamer, and my place to go for something more fun and entertaining is one of the best rated bingo sites you can find online. Here I can hook up with friends and family via the chat feature and catch up with all the latest news and gossip at the same time as have a few games too. Sites like Swagbingo don’t only offer bingo games as an option they also have the most popular casino and slots games to play too, and as my smartphone allows me to play at anytime and anywhere (as long as there is an internet connection) then I can pick up on my games when I am in need of some laughs, which after watching the first episode of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ I was in dire need of.
