Best known as Simon’s dad in E4’s The Inbetweeners, actor Martin Trenaman (PhoneShop) returns to the role of Mr Cooper this month on the big screen.

Released in cinemas on Friday 19th August, The Inbetweeners Movie sees the boys head to Crete for their first lads’ holiday.

In addition to his acting work, Martin won 1994’s So You Think You’re Funny, has appeared on stage with Lee Evans and has written for the likes of Lenny Henry and Bill Bailey.

CultBox caught up with Martin to find out more…

When you first began filming The Inbetweeners, did you ever imagine that one day there would be a feature film coming out in cinemas?

“I didn’t even imagine the show being on TV. I was only cast on the Saturday afternoon and started filming first thing Monday morning. I was busy getting to grips with the character and the lines.”

Can you give us any hints about what to expect from the movie and Mr Cooper’s involvement?

“Rest assured Mr cooper gives his usual sound advice to the boys.”

What’s your favourite memory from the movie shoot?

“Soup at 3am. You wouldn’t think that soup at that time would be appropriate. But it was bloody lovely. There are loads of other great moments but I don’t want to spoil the film for anyone.”

Did you get to film on location in Mallorca at all?

“As usual my locations were very much centred around the M25.”

What are you going to miss most about working with the cast?

“I’ll miss many things but mainly the word for word renditions of The Office that the boys give me in the car.”

And is there anything you won’t miss?

“No, it was a joy to work on. Maybe the night shoots.”

Do you think that the movie is the final chapter for The Inbetweeners or could you see a fourth series or TV specials being made?

“I’ll be honest, I have no idea what plans are afoot, but I would love to be involved in any future Inbetweeners projects. Maybe a cartoon… maybe not.”

Do you get recognised much by fans of The Inbetweeners?

“I do get recognised quite a lot by fans and they are mainly delightful . I did have one girl who spotted me on my mobile in deep conversation and still came over, nodded at me, put her arm around me and took a photo on her phone whilst I was mid-conversation, which was odd.”

Can you give us any hints about what to expect in the second series of PhoneShop?

“The scripts are fantastic for Series 2. I promise more laughs from Sutton than you can throw a stick at. Rest assured Lance is still at the top of his game… oh.”
