‘Doctor Who’: Comic-Con quotes round-up

Posted Filed under

Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, writer Toby Whithouse and executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis took part in a number of interviews and a panel event at Comic-Con in San Diego over the weekend.

Here’s a summary of our favourite quotes…

» How Matt Smith sees the Doctor: “Just the very notion that there’s a man who wears a bowtie, who sporadically picks up hot women and travels around the universe, for no apparent reason, just to show off and go ‘look where I can go’ is kinda cool.”

» Karen Gillan on Series 7: “Yes, I am going to come back”.

» “I met Data [from Star Trek, Brent Spiner] the other day at a convention, I had a photo with him and everything and he said he wants to be in Doctor Who, which is really exciting!”, reveals Karen Gillan.

» There are “some real huge cliffhangers coming up”, says Matt Smith.

» Toby Whithouse on the likelihood of another multi-Doctor story: “You’d have to ask Steven [Moffat] that but yeah, why not? Come on, let’s bring them all back.”

» Matt Smith on the Flesh avatar of Amy’s baby exploding in her arms: “You don’t get that on Days Of Our Lives…”

» “Amy Pond is way cooler than Karen”, says Matt Smith.

» Karen Gillan on the Series 6 finale: “The biggest twist you could ever imagine happens in Episode 13.”

» Matt Smith teases Episode 8: “‘Let’s Kill Hitler’ is going to be brilliant. River Song is just phenomenal in it.”

» Karen Gillan on keeping secrets: “My secret, I’ve still got. And you still don’t know it.” – Matt Smith: “Steven’s told Karen something about… we can’t even say what it’s about.” – Karen Gillan: “It’s so exciting! I feel so powerful now.” – Matt Smith: “She’s told me what it’s about, but she won’t say what it is.”

» “Episode 13 is mad and sprawling”, hints Matt Smith.

» Beth Willis on the possibility of a female Doctor: “Every time the Doctor regenerates, having a woman will always cross the mind of whoever’s running the show.”

» Karen Gillan on the Doctor’s dark side: “I think in Episode 10, we see some of the Doctor’s dark side. Rule number one: The Doctor lies. That’s going to be explored.”

» “For ‘The God Complex’, I did a lot of research into Greek mythology, for reasons which will become apparent”, Toby Whithouse teases.

» Karen Gillan on Amy’s relationship with the Doctor: “I just think they’re best mates now, they finally made it there.”

» Matt Smith on Episode 10: “It feels really trippy and weird… Karen Gillan puts in the performance of her life and I think the best performance in Doctor Who she’s ever done in Episode 10, she’s brilliant. It’s this mad, trippy, Kubricky sort of episode.”

» Karen Gillan on Episode 8: “It’s [River Song’s] big episode, her big moment. Alex Kingston kills it, as they say in America.”

» Matt Smith on the scheduling of Series 7: “We’ll still shoot 14 [episodes], but… we dont know the actual scheduling and when it’s going to be… they’ll just be transmitted in a slightly different way.”

» “I’ve just moved into a new flat and I have nothing to decorate it with other than a lot of Doctor Who merchandise, it’s really sad! I even have a knitted doll of Matt!”, reveals Karen Gillan.

» Matt Smith on the chance of a return for the Dream Lord from ‘Amy’s Choice’: “[Toby Jones is] one of my favourite actors. I’d love to get him back, with a bigger army behind him. If you look at the blood on The Doctor’s hand over the ages, there’s so much of it.”
