Could ‘USS Calister’ be Black Mirror’s first spin-off?

We’re not short of Star Trek homages these days, with The Orville, a Galaxy Quest reboot in the works and, now, Black Mirror‘s own ‘USS Calister’, which landed on Netflix as part of the series’ fourth run.

The episode was well received, and now online rumblings have it slated as the first potential spin-off from Charlie Brooker’s dark dystopia.

“[Producer Louise Sutton] cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning it off into a TV series,” Haynes told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’d love to do a TV series of ‘USS Callister’ — it’s probably one of the best pilots for a space show, ever. And I made it! So I’m keen to see it as a TV series. I think Charlie Brooker might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know. Being a fan of the show as much as I am, and being a part of making it, I’d love to work with that crew and cast again. It’s a gift for a director.”

Series creator Charlie Brooker previously spoke about the potential for episodes that dipped back into the universes of older episodes, saying: “We’ve had ideas for sequels as well, which is something we haven’t entirely explored. I wouldn’t be averse to it. We’ve got a couple of ideas in mind, but we’re sort of thinking about, practically, how we could do that and when the right time to do that would be.

“So potentially. But then in a Darwinian way, a new idea pops up and that wins the knife fight for the slot.”
