Written by Adrian Hodges (Survivors, Primeval), the ten-part series follows “a crack-team of highly trained soldiers, far more than the King’s personal bodyguards, confronting impossible odds and fighting any battle if the cause is just”.

Co-produced with BBC Worldwide, The Musketeers “bursts with escapism, adventure and romance and is set to thrill audiences with cracking stories of the week”.

Kate Harwood, Controller, Drama Series & Serials, describes the show as an “entirely fresh take on the classic characters”.

Other new commissions for BBC One include six-part nursing drama Frankie, created and written by Lucy Gannon (Soldier Soldier), and one-off drama The Lady Vanishes.

Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One, commented: “These new BBC One commissions from drama present a richly ambitious slate that will thrill, move and delight audiences.”
