Doctor Who Jenna Coleman Clara

The Mirror reports that Jenna Coleman will depart her role as companion Clara Oswald in “a sensational Christmas storyline” later this year.

The newspaper quotes a source as saying: “The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out. By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever. She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.”

The source added: “It was very much a mutual decision. It’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.”

The 28-year-old actress joined Doctor Who at the start of Series 7 in ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ and this year’s Christmas special will be Coleman’s 25th episode.

Update [18 August 2014]:

A BBC spokeswoman has told Radio Times: “It’s speculation at this time. People will have to watch the series to see if she’s coming back or not. We want to focus on the upcoming series.”
