Doctor Who: Matt Smith had a “wobble” after being cast in lead role

Matt Smith has been chatting about how close he came to turning Doctor Who down…

Matt Smith appeared on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs over the weekend, and was chatting about the time when he was cast as David Tennant’s replacement in Doctor Who.

Confirming that he had “loved every minute” of being the Doctor, but also revealed to Discs host Kirsty Young that he had “a wobble” after he was told he’d got the role of the Doctor. “I was like, I don’t think I’m going to do it”, he confessed. “My agent said ‘you’re going to do it’”. And as you will know, Smith then duly signed on the dotted line, and became the 11th Doctor in the show.

Smith also endorsed, again, the choice of Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, describing her as “brilliant”. “It’s high time and she’ll be sensational”, he said.
