ITV has confirmed that Call the Midwife star Jessica Raine’s recent drama series Jericho has been axed after one season.

Created and written by Steve Thompson (Sherlock, Doctor Who), the eight-part series launched in January and was set in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1870s.

An ITV spokesperson told The Sun: “ITV regularly refreshes its drama portfolio and consequently Jericho isn’t returning to the channel.”

JERICHO CLARKE PETERS as Coates

The Wire star Clarke Peters hinted earlier this year that Jericho was a troubled production, commenting that had writer Steve Thompson been “left to his own devices” then there would have been the “most amazing piece of storytelling in Jericho that you’d ever seen, I promise you. But he has got to sit down and answer to somebody.”

Jericho focused upon the shanty town of Jericho, home to a community that will live, thrive and die in the shadow of the viaduct they’ve been brought together to build.
