Doctor Who star Matt Smith has confirmed that the upcoming 50th anniversary special will “move the narrative of the character forward”.

Speaking to CultBox on the set of ‘The Day of the Doctor’ in Cardiff earlier this year, the actor explained: “I think what Steven [Moffat]’s done cleverly with an episode like this – which is a celebration, but it isn’t just that – he’s managed to move the narrative of the character forward in a really epic way.”

Smith added: “It makes me really excited to read the Christmas special because I just think ‘God, where’s he taking this?’ I don’t know but it feels it’s climbing this huge slope somewhere.”

He teased: “Hopefully it’s going to be as epic as we can make it.”

‘The Day of the Doctor’ will air at 7.50pm (GMT) on Saturday 23 November on BBC One.
