Matt Smith’s ‘Terminator Genisys’ sequel has been cancelled

The planned sequel to last summer’s Terminator Genisys movie has been officially removed from Paramount’s release schedule.

Featuring Doctor Who star Matt Smith alongside Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard) as Kyle Reese and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) as John Connor, the fifth movie in the Terminator franchise was released in cinemas in July 2015.

However, following the disappointing reaction and poor box office results for the reboot, the franchise was put “on hold indefinitely” in October.

A sequel had been scheduled for release on 19 May 2017 in the US, but Den of Geek reports that the movie has now been dropped from Paramount’s schedule of upcoming releases. The Baywatch movie, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, will now take its intended release date.

Terminator Genisys did in fact end up trebling its production budget, mainly due to success in the Chinese market, ultimately making $440m at the box office.

Matt Smith revealed last year that he was contracted for future films in the rebooted franchise: “I am part of the sequels, yes, so I’ll be around for two and three. Which is good. Keeps me employed for a while!”
