New ‘Doctor Who’ star Peter Capaldi promises ‘there’ll be no flirting’

Peter Capaldi has revealed that he was “absolutely adamant” there would not be a romantic relationship between his Doctor and companion Clara in the new series of Doctor Who.

The Scottish actor told The Sunday Times: “There’ll be no flirting, that’s for sure. It’s not what this Doctor is concerned with.”

He teased: “It’s quite a fun relationship but I did call and say, ‘I want no Papa-Nicole moments.’ There was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant.”

Writer Steven Moffat hinted at how the Doctor’s new persona will affect his relationship with companion Clara earlier this week: “From a Doctor she could sort of control, because he had a crush on her, she’s landed with a Doctor who barely registers that she’s a girl.”

Series 8 will begin on BBC One on Saturday 23 August with a feature-length premiere episode entitled ‘Deep Breath’.
