Shadowhunters cancelled after three seasons

The Freeform network – formerly known as ABC Family – has decided to pull the plug on Shadowhunters instead of renewing the supernatural drama series for a fourth season.

The series, which takes inspiration from The Mortal Instruments book series, debuted on our screens in 2016. Shadowhunters was developed by Ed Decter, and it starred Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, Harry Shum Jr and Alisha Wainwright. Constantin Film, who also made the Mortal Instruments movie, partnered with Freeform on the project.

Freeform released this statement regarding the Shadowhunters cancellation:

“We are very proud of ‘Shadowhunters,’ a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite. However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season. But as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending. The twelve episodes will air in spring of 2019. We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama.”

Shadowhunters season 3, which will wrap up its run next year, will mark the show’s end, unless another network or a streaming service swoops in to save the show.

We’ll keep you posted if we hear any developments.
