Michael Jackson: BBC plans new documentary, ‘The Rise And Fall’

The BBC will broadcast a new documentary about Michael Jackson, which is going by the working title Michael Jackson: The Rise And Fall, from a prolific Jackson-chronicling filmmaker named Jacques Peretti. Here are the details…

Following the discussion around Channel 4 and HBO’s Leaving Neverland documentary, which features testimonies from people that claim that they were abused by Jackson, perhaps it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the BBC has announced its own new documentary about the deceased pop star.

The BBC’s official announcement tells us that this is Jacques Peretti’s fourth film about Michael Jackson. He previously made Michael Jackson: What Really Happened, Michael Jackson’s Last Days: What Really Happened, and Michael Jackson’s Secret Hollywood.

Peretti’s new Jackson doc is described by the BBC thusly:

“Featuring testimony from those who knew and worked with Michael Jackson, BBC Two’s Michael Jackson: The Rise And Fall (W/T) will explore the life and career of one of the most famous and controversial pop stars in history, looking at his life and legacy in the round and asking how and why he became who he did.”

In terms of specifics, it sounds like they’re planning to cover a lot of ground: “It will take us from his early years with The Jackson 5 in Gary, Indiana, to his time in New York – and the notorious nightclub Studio 54 – to his relationship with the media, retreat into fantasy and creation of Neverland, to the preparations for his This Is It concerts shortly before his death.”

Patrick Holland, the controller of BBC Two, offered this statement:

“Jaques Peretti has been one of the foremost critical commentators of Michael Jackson and his troubled life and legacy. When he came to us over a year ago with the idea of reappraising him 10 years after his death, we were immediately taken with the project. We knew it would not shy away from the controversies that surround MJ and would be a thorough look at the many facets of his life that would help us try to understand what made him who he was.”

As we hear more about the project, which is set to broadcast in 2019, we’ll be sure to let you know.
