Ruby Rose cast as Batwoman in upcoming CW series

The CW has found its Batwoman, with Orange is the New Black‘s Ruby Rose joining the cast of the upcoming DCTV crossover as this universe’s Kate Kane.

The character is set to appear first in this year’s crossover event, before getting her own planned spin-off next season. Kane will be the first gay character to lead a superhero series on television, adding to the channel’s roster of LGBTQ+ players like Sara Lance and Constantine on Legends of Tomorrow.

The show will also be our first look at Gotham in the Arrow-verse after it has been teased on Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, though – taking a tip from Supergirl‘s treatment of Superman – it seems Batwoman will be flying solo without the assistance of her more famous counterpart.

Rose was likely drawn to the role because of its groundbreaking nature, as the actress is a lesbian and also identifies as genderfluid. Since rising to fame she has become a popular figure, and so this news will likely draw a brand new audience to The CW’s crop of superhero series.
