‘Doctor Who’ audio story review: ‘Ghost Trap’ (Big Finish Short Trips)

Posted Filed under

‘Ghost Trap’ is the fourth in a series of new Doctor Who short stories read by an original cast member.

This time Louise Jameson recreates Leela and the Fourth Doctor in a Nick Wallace story.

The story is set early in Leela’s time with the Doctor, and as the title suggests is a creepy tale of mysterious sounds, shadows, bodies and mystery. The TARDIS lands on a crippled spaceship following the beacon of a salvage team. They explore the ship to find the salvage team and crew long since dead and a recording tells them the salvage team died one by one by at the hands of a spectre. At this point Leela becomes separated from the Doctor and must survive without his insight.

The reading is solid and the audio is enhanced with various voice effects as Louise becomes various flight recordings or speaks over an intercom system. Although audio, there is a real sense of dark menace with moments that make the listener’s heart beat that little bit faster. Full marks to Louise for her reading and voicing of Tom Baker’s Doctor and sundry other parties.

The story is interesting with a few twists making the setting darker and darker. Before the end the Doctor has some difficult choices and must make the ghost trap of the title before he can leave the crippled ship.

Nick Wallace has also penned September’s release in this range; we can’t wait!
