Directed by Oscar-winner Jane Campion and Australian director Garth Davis, the six-part series is set in the remote mountains of New Zealand and follows the disappearance of a five months-pregnant 12-year-old named Tui who was last seen standing chest deep in a frozen lake. In this classic mythic struggle, investigating detective, Robin Griffin (Moss), must lose herself in order to find the missing girl.

During the investigation, she collides with Matt Mitcham (Mullan), Tui’s father, a local drug lord, and G.J (Hunter), a guru at a local women’s camp. Robin will find this the case that tests her limits and sends her on a journey of self-discovery.

Episode 1
Saturday 13 July 2013, 9.10pm

The South Island, New Zealand: a twelve-year-old girl walks into the waters of an alpine lake. Saved before she freezes or drowns, she is found to be pregnant. The police are called. The girl disappears.

Detective Robin Griffin, a child-protection specialist, recently returned to the area to care for her sick mother, is pulled in by the local police force to help with the case. The whole community is under a cloud. Chief suspect is Matt Mitcham, the girl’s father, who is in dispute with a Women’s Camp over a piece of land called Paradise. Robin’s investigation will send shockwaves through the town and dig up a personal history she had hoped to keep buried.

Episode 2
Saturday 20 July 2013

As the search for the missing girl grows in intensity, so do fears for her survival. Detective Robin Griffin pursues a suspect to his house for questioning but risks losing her own life by going after him.

Robin goes to the Women’s Camp at Paradise where Tui was last seen. She intends to ask questions but is interrogated herself by the gnomic GJ. She gets a warrant to search Matt Mitcham’s house but while there discovers something she hoped not to hear.

Episode 3
Saturday 27 July 2013

The case seems to be getting away from Robin. The girl is still missing and the community is beginning to buckle under the weight of suspicion.

Under pressure herself, Robin rekindles a relationship with an old flame, Johnno Mitcham, the older son of the Mitcham clan. But inviting her past back into her life may have been a mistake: old wounds are still raw and anger explodes into violence.

Episode 4
Saturday 3 August 2013

A violent indiscretion sees Robin thrown off the case. The police quietly close the case on the missing girl: there have been no leads and she is assumed dead. But Robin won’t let go. Even as she tries to process the pain of her own past, Robin carries on working unofficially on the case.

Dangerously taking matters into her own hands, Robin unearths a small glimmer of hope. Footage found on a mobile phone suggests Tui might still be alive.

Episode 5
Saturday 10 August 2013

The race is on to find Tui. Robin questions Tui’s friend Jamie. He’s been arrested for shoplifting groceries. Robin suspects he is feeding Tui and could be the baby’s father. He won’t give anything away. But then he too disappears soon after.

Matt Mitcham sends a posse of hunters into the bush to find his daughter. Robin goes in after them, but before she can help, tragedy strikes.

Episode 6
Saturday 17 August 2013

Tui’s birth is imminent. Robin is summoned to Matt Mitcham’s to secure his confession. What she hears leaves her on her knees.

Near despair, Robin summons all she has left to get to Tui before Matt. Nothing though can prepare her for where she will have to go, or what she will have to see. Acting on instinct, she heads off to confront the dark creator alone where the investigation reaches its shocking conclusion.
