Agent Carter rumoured to appear in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s final season

A rumour with a bit of evidence to back it up suggests that Hayley Atwell could be reprising Peggy Carter again in the time-hopping Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 7.

FandomWire is the site reporting this rumour, claiming that Atwell is on-board to reprise her role in the final season of ABC’s superhero-adjacent spy series. This same site recently reported the rumour that Black Lightning will appear in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, shortly before that story was officially confirmed. Could the same thing be happening here?

We’ll just have to wait and see, of course, but this rumour does make a fair bit of sense. After all, we already know that time-travel will play a part in the final season of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 7, with the central gang starting the season in the 1930s and possibly moving onto different time periods to boot.

Fans of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. will remember that Atwell’s Peggy previously turned up in the show in flashback form. She also starred in her own ABC series Agent Carter, which was short-lived and ended abruptly on a cliff-hanger. Could fans of Agent Carter be given some closure before Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. wraps up for good?

One piece of actual evidence that seems to back this rumour up is the fact that Enver Gjokaj, who played Daniel Souza in Agent Carter, was recently mentioned in one of Ming-Na Wen’s social media posts from the set. The Instagram post was swiftly deleted, but screenshots ended up on Reddit, with Gjokaj’s name being clearly visible in the image.

This rumour makes sense on a thematic level, too: with the modern-day agents ending their journey on our screens, what better time to bring things full circle and visit the very first S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

In other MCU goings-on: the movie Avengers: Endgame, which saw Hayley Atwell and James D’Arcy both reprising their roles from Agent Carter, left fans a little bit unsure as to whether Cap got his happy ending with Peggy in the main MCU timeline or a separate reality. We wouldn’t expect such a big movie plot point to be clarified in a TV show, but the possibility of seeing Peggy and Souza back on our screens is still an exciting one. We’ll let you know if we hear an official confirmation or denial…
