BBC One’s new series The Salisbury Poisonings has racked up some impressive viewing figures. The show, which looks back on the events of March 2018 when double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia Skripal were poisoned in Salisbury with a Novichok nerve agent, hit 7.2 million viewers on Sunday night (via Deadline), making it the highest-rated new drama launch of the year in the UK.

The series stars Anne-Marie Duff, Rafe Spall, Mark Addy, Annabel Scholey and Johnny Harris, and examines the impact the 2018 Novichok poisonings had on the local community. The drama tells the remarkable story of how ordinary people and public services reacted to a crisis on their doorstep, displaying extraordinary heroism as their city became the focus of an unprecedented national emergency. It captures the bravery, resilience and, in some cases, personal tragedy of the unsuspecting locals who faced a situation of unimaginable horror so close to home.
