The 18th season (yep, eighteenth!) of South Park begins airing in September, including the hit animated comedy’s milestone 250th episode.

This week marks 17 years since the show’s first ever episode, ‘Cartman Gets an Anal Probe’, aired – so we decided to pick out five of our favourite episodes…

 

‘Scott Tenorman Must Die’

(Season 5 Episode 4, originally aired 11 July 2001)

Guest starring Radiohead, ‘Scott Tenorman Must Die’ is a revenge story following Cartman’s revenge on ninth-grader Scott Tenorman after he sells Cartman pubic hair to make him reach puberty. South Park‘s creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have named the episode as one of their favorites on many occasions.

 

‘The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers’

(Season 6 Episode 13, originally aired 13 November 2002)

The boys pretend ot be characters from the Lord of the Rings movies, embarking on a a “quest” to return a copy of the film to a local video store, unaware that the tape has been accidentally switched with a pornographic film. Matt Stone commented: “If we could make every South Park episode this good, we’d be totally psyched.”

 

‘Make Love, Not Warcraft’

(Season 10 Episode 8, originally aired 4 October 2006)

The boys take on a high level World of Warcraft player, playing every day in an attempt to stop him. ‘Make Love, Not Warcraft’ was voted as fans’  favorite episode of all time in 2008 on Comedy Central in the UK and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program in 2007. ‘Trapped in the Closet’

(Season 9 Episode 12, originally aired 16 November 2005)

Stan tries out Scientology when he looks for something “fun and free” to do, only to find himself recognized as the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the church. Scientologist Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, requested to be released from his contract after finding the episode too offensive.

 

‘Imaginationland, Episode III’

(Season 11 Episode 12, originally aired 31 October 2007)

‘Imaginationland, Episode III’ – or ‘Moistening of the Scrotum’ – is the concluding part of a three-episode story from Season 11, which was originally intended to be made as a feature-length film. The trilogy won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program for One Hour or More in 2008.
