‘Lip Service’: Series 1 recap

Posted Filed under

Returning to the bars and clubs of Glasgow’s Merchant City to follow the lives of a group of 20-something lesbians, Series 2 of Lip Service begins at 9pm this Friday on BBC Three.

In anticipation of the new six-part series, remind yourself of where we left the gang’s tangled web of sex, lies and true love way back in November 2010 with our Series 1 recap…

Deserted by girlfriend Frankie (Ruta Gedmintas), who she’d known since school, the cautious and easily rattled Cat (Laura Fraser) spent a lot of time recovering, throwing herself into her architecture career, behaving responsibly, and not giving herself nearly enough credit for the things she has achieved. Then just as Cat finally had the opportunity to move on with policewoman Sam (Heather Peace), guess who returned from New York…

Series 1 saw Cat make a good go of her relationship with Sam, however, even if she was unable to shut Frankie out for good.

Frankie, having returned for her Aunt’s funeral and decided to stay, found her entire identity came into question as she began to dig through her family history. Her life was up-ended when she discovered her own death certificate, shocked to find that “Francesca Alan” died in the accident she believed claimed her parents’ lives.

Determined to track down her real mother and, eventually, the reason for her abandonment, the more she uncovered the more she ended up clinging to Cat, “the only girl who’s ever known me”.

Meanwhile, Cat’s flatmate Tess (Fiona Button) was having a tough time as an out-of-luck actress with a cheating ex-girlfriend still causing her grief. Things looked to be improving when she met TV presenter Lou (Roxanne McKee), who inched out of the closet towards Tess. It ended in disaster though when Tess realised Lou was also continuing an affair with her co-presenter, leaving Tess alone with only the ever-faithful Ed (James Anthony Pearson), Cat’s brother, for company.

Clearly dying of unrequited love for Tess, Ed’s unfailing devotion was blissfully ignored. Lacking confidence and seemingly at a loss with her life not turning out as she’d hoped, Tess finally crumpled on her 30th birthday, her face ravaged by an allergic reaction to botox.

Series 1 ended hopefully for Tess though, winning the lead role in a play and hitting it off with hot, electrician neighbour Fin (Lorraine Burroughs). Meanwhile, Cat had difficult relationship decisions ahead having finally given in to her feelings for Frankie, and Frankie ended up on her mother’s doorstep for the first time.
