3 Sports Documentaries to Watch This Summer

Posted Filed under

It has been a summer to remember for sports fans this year, with the Euros, Copa America, Wimbledon, and Royal Ascot just some of the events that have lit up their televisions.

If sports are your thing, and you are feeling some post-tournament blues, here is a look at some documentaries that might fill the void over the next few months.

Horsepower

In the same style as Formula One’s successful Drive to Survive, Horsepower has gone behind the scenes in horse racing to showcase the sport spectacularly. The series follows successful trainer Andrew Balding and jockey Oisin Murphy in their bid to win major races in the sport.

Glorious Goodwood is one of the highlights of the summer in horse racing, with the feature race being the Goodwood Cup, where Kyprios is the odds-on favourite at 8/13 in the betting on horse racing this year. This meeting features heavily in the documentary, as Balding and Murphy pair up to attempt to win the meeting’s biggest race.

Murphy is one of the horse racing tips to be Champion Jockey in Great Britain this year. The cameras showcase what a normal day is like for the rider, from waking up at 5 am to ride at Balding’s yard to a busy day at the races in the afternoon. It is a fascinating programme which gives you a great perspective of the sport.

Together Treble Winners

Manchester City added their names to the history books in the 2022/23 season by winning the treble in English football. They landed the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League, and it is documented on Together Treble Winners.

City boss Pep Guardiola is considered the greatest football coach of his generation. This documentary gives viewers access to his team talks, which are fascinating, especially during half-time when he needs to get a reaction from his players.

This six-part docuseries showcases the rollercoaster ride involved in a season for the players, coaching staff, and supporters. It is a must for any football fan, regardless of whether you are a Manchester City fan or not.

Beckham

David Beckham is one of England’s greatest-ever sports stars. Not only did he have success on the pitch for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and England, but he has also been successful outside of the sport in fashion, business, and as a football club owner.

This four-part documentary looks back on Beckham’s career, covering some of the big storylines such as his public fallout with Sir Alex Ferguson, how he fell in love with Posh Spice, and becoming a national scapegoat following England’s failure at the 1998 World Cup.

What makes this documentary so interesting is, for the first time, everything is told from Beckham’s point of view. He discusses and reflects on all the big moments in his career and life.

Beckham remains a huge brand even to this day and he reveals what he now does with his time. It is nostalgic and revealing for any football supporter or fan of the Beckham power couple.

Enjoy all three sports documentaries and hopefully, they will have you hooked from the opening episode to the finish.
