Squid Game Gears Up for Season Two in 2024

Squid Game fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The second season of the hit South Korean series has been confirmed for 2024. The dystopian drama captivated audiences worldwide upon its debut in 2021, leaving enthusiasts eager for more. Netflix subscribers can expect the next instalment to hit screens in the latter half of 2024.

Despite the veil of secrecy surrounding plot details for the upcoming season, lead actor Lee Jung-Jae, who portrays the central character in the series, has offered a glimpse into the creative process. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jung-Jae expressed his confidence in creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk’s ability to craft a compelling new story for the sequel. He acknowledged the intensity of the creative journey and the added pressure stemming from the show’s immense global success, emphasising his desire to support Dong-hyuk’s artistic vision without adding unnecessary stress to the process.

An expanding Squid Game universe

In the interim between seasons, the Squid Game franchise expanded its universe with the reality spin-off show, Squid Game: The Challenge. This spin-off pitted 456 participants against each other in a series of challenges inspired by the original series, offering a prize of $4.56 million to the ultimate victor. Netflix also created an official clothing range featuring t-shirts, tracksuits, and hoodies inspired by the original series.

Such is its legacy, game developer Light & Wonder developed a themed slot called “Squid Game: One Lucky Day” that’s popular at online casino UK platforms. The 5-reel, 4-row slot, which features 40 paylines, includes recognisable symbols that mimic characters and elements of creator Dong-hyuk’s series. Joining well-established slots like Bonanza, which can currently be played with 99 free spins, Squid Game: One Lucky Day is an appealing TV show-influenced casino game that joins other recent small-screen additions such as Rick and Morty, Game of Thrones, and Breaking Bad.

Squid Game joins an influx of new seasons in 2024

As well as Netflix’s pop culture phenomenon, audiences can also eagerly anticipate several beloved series returning to the screen before the end of the year. Season 2 of The Night Agent, season 6 of Cobra Kai, season 4 of Outer Banks, and both season 4 of Emily in Paris and season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series are just a few of the eagerly awaited shows slated for release.

The influx of upcoming releases stems in part from production setbacks caused by last year’s dual labour strikes, which halted production for several months during the summer and fall. Since then, production has resumed at an accelerated pace, resulting in a potential surplus of programming in the latter months of the year.

As fans eagerly await the unveiling of the second season, anticipation continues to build as speculation swirls regarding the direction of the storyline and the fate of its beloved characters. With the promise of another gripping story and the return of the show’s signature blend of suspense and social commentary, Squid Game season two is poised to captivate audiences once again, solidifying its status as a cultural phenomenon.
