The Crown was quite possibly one of the most popular television shows over the last few years. Six seasons spanned Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne, but since the finale in 2023, the royal family has drawn even more attention, and as a result, fans have been calling for another season.

Netflix Has Been Negotiating the New Show

According to various sources, Netflix is locked in negotiations for a possible spin-off show and has recently sealed the deal regarding the potential plot. This makes perfect sense as well, especially when you consider that interest in the royal family is at an all-time high.

Harry & Meghan was released by Netflix as a docuseries in 2022 and was a huge success. Podcasts also include The Royals with Roya and Kate, which is also a hit, and A Right Royal Podcast has also been experiencing steadily increasing viewership.

In iGaming, the royal theme is also prominent, with themed casino and slots including Reel King Riches and Mighty Crown Legacy of Mars. Both have a regal theme, featuring crowns and gemstones, which are synonymous with royalty.

One thing to take note of is that the spinoff series to The Crown might not be what people are fully expecting. It’s been reported that the spinoff series will span from the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 to the wedding of Princess Elizabeth, which took place in 1947.

Casting for the series is said to take place between late 2026 and early 2027.

A Modern Series of The Crown is Quite a Long Time Away

It’s not currently known whether or not The Crown is going to ever depict the current royal family, but the showrunner Peter Morgan has only said that he follows a 20-year rule. This suggests that a modern series could be quite a long way off.

Morgan is against the show becoming journalistic, and writing about popular figures like Harry and Meghan would make it somewhat so.

Morgan has also said that as the couple is in the middle of their journey right now, there is no telling how it’s going to end, but by giving storylines 20 years before writing about them, it becomes possible to ensure that the position and its relevance can be viewed through a historical lens.

The idea of a prequel for the show, however, could be interesting, as it would follow the lead-up to the events in The Crown and possibly provide even more backstory. Even though much of the royal history is known, it will give the writers of the show plenty of opportunity to try and show events in a dramatised way, and possibly even cover some of the lesser-known events that took place throughout history.

If the timelines are to be understood correctly, then we could see the spin-off for the show due roughly in 2028; however, that’s if the show progresses with no issues and if things are smooth sailing for the producers and writers on the show.
