Excitement behind the project continues to rumble as Neon acquires the rights to Clarissa, here’s what we know so far:

What’s it about?

The feature is an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway, socialite figure Clarissa is readying herself and her Lagos home for a party. The gathering surprises our protagonist as she never expected to cross paths with characters from her childhood, close friends she’s since grown apart from. The group begins to reminisce as the night continues, they recall the complexities, outward romances, secret desires and forgotten dreams. This collective reflection brings about a reckoning for the group as their old bonds rise to the surface once again.

Clarissa was shot on 35mm film, filming took place in Lagos and Delta State, Nigeria.

Who’s in it?

The cast list released for the film includes Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), David Oyelowo (Selma), India Amarteifio (Queen Charlotte), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) and Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso). This ensemble of well-known faces seems promising for a story so dependent on emotional impact and complex character backgrounds.

Who’s behind it?

The film was directed by twin filmmakers Arie and Chuko Esiri (This Is My Desire), with Chuko writing the screenplay and both twins also producing.

When’s it out?

Although there’s no confirmed date yet, Neon will give the film a US release and is representing the film for international markets.
