An exclusive reveal of the cast of the upcoming papal thriller has given us names for this brand-new film, which has begun filming in Italy, here’s what we know so far:

What’s it about?

Santo Subito! is a film set in the Vatican, which has had a resurgence in the movie-sphere with popular releases in recent years such as The Two Popes and Conclave. The story takes place during the canonisation of Pope John Paul II and explores his relationship with Polish-born American philosopher Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka as the two had previously exchanged letters with intimate details. Father Joseph Murolo, an American-born priest is brought in by the Vatican to investigate the Pope’s life and find any unholy skeletons in his closet before he completes his journey to sainthood. Moralities and personalities clash as we re-enter the arena at the heart of catholicism to witness another dramatic, characterful story unfold within it.

Who’s in it?

The confirmed cast include Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things), Charlotte Rampling (Broadchurch), Andrzej Chyra (Leave No Traces), Cezary Żak (No Pressure), Marisa Borini (A Castle in Italy), Adam Bessa (Harka), Anton Lesser (Wolf Hall). The current cast list promises to show us an international array of talent, showcasing actors from Poland, France, Italy, the U.K. and the U.S.

Who’s behind it?

Santo Subito! is being directed by Bertrand Bonello (The Beast) and is co-written with Thomas Bidegain (Emilia Perez)

When’s it out?

Although there’s no confirmed release date as of yet, filming has begun in Rome, with shooting to take place in both Italy and Poland.
