What is Lioness and what happens in season 3
The latest press release from Paramount+ has a reprise of seasons 1 and 2, which we quote from — spoilers if you have yet to watch.
In season 3, hidden networks, foreign operatives, and personal betrayals collide. Joe (Zoe Saldaña) walks the line between duty and home as unseen forces circle her world. Guided by Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman) and Westfield (Michael Kelly), Joe confronts enemies operating in the shadows, leaving her to reckon with a war that now reaches into every part of her life.
Joe McNamara is a CIA station chief who runs Lioness, a program that recruits, trains, and leads women into undercover operations. Kaitlyn Meade is a strategic-minded CIA supervisor who oversees Lioness – and, in turn, Joe’s missions.
Now the summary of seasons 1 & 2:
Season 1: Joe recruits Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) to embed herself in the wealthy family with connections to terror groups in order to take out the groups’ main financial backer, Asmar Ali Amrohi (Bassem Youssef). Along the way, Cruz develops a strong bond with Asmar’s daughter Aaliyah. In the end, the mission is accomplished, but Cruz isn’t sure it was just, and she takes leave of Joe and the team.
Season 2: a member of Congress (Czarina Mireles) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel backed by China, Joe and her team are called back to action. Joe’s niece Josephina (Genesis Rodriguez ), aka Josie, a captain in the US Army, is recruited to be the new Lioness. Josie gets help and guidance from an unlikely source: Cruz, who returns to help the mission. Operation Sky Hawk ends in a blaze of bullets on the battlefield (and a slew of injuries), but once again, the mission is accomplished.
Through it all, Joe struggles to balance her job with her home life with husband Neal and her two children.
