Pizza Express documentary set to reveal behind the scenes secrets

From the team behind Chocolate Dreams: Inside Hotel Chocolat…

A new report from Deadline reveals that BBC Studios is working on a new Pizza Express “access documentary”, which is likely to air on Channel 5 next year.

The new doco wants to take viewers behind the scenes of the popular pizza chain from the ground up. There are currently 627 Pizza Express restaurants in the UK, and creative director Lisa Ausden – whose team were behind this year’s Channel 5 three-parter Chocolate Dreams: Inside Hotel Chocolat – is looking to give Pizza Express the same treatment as Hotel Chocolat got.

Although Pizza Express was founded in 1965 by Peter Boizot, it is now a Chinese-owned group after being sold to China-based private equity firm Hony Capital in a deal worth £900 million back in 2014. In 2008, Pizza Express was in the spotlight for paying its staff less than the legal minimum wage, and forcing them to rely on tips. A chain reaction then led to a passionate campaign in Parliament to make it illegal to do so.
