It is the lowest figure the series has recorded for an opening episode since its launch; but is also the first series to launch without a single member of the original cast in the central triumvirate.
The weekend once again belonged to Call the Midwife, which delivered 9.2m viewers to BBC One and a 31.4% share of the audience. It’s not as high a figure as the opening episode of Series 2 achieved a couple of week ago but it is up 500k people on last week.
ITV continue to win the Sunday 9pm slot as Mr Selfridge beat the Beeb’s Ripper Street once again. The department store drama was seen by 6.1m (24%) viewers whilst the Victorian crime drama attracted a still respectable 5.1m (20.1%).
