The latest of BBC Three’s acquisitions from down under, after a string of Chris Lilley shows and the under-seen fantasy show Cleverman (catch up now on Netflix!) is Ronny Chieng: International Student. The show already aired on ABC in Australia and you can see the trailer at the foot of this post.
The premise is more or less there in the title. Ronny Chieng, best known so far as a Daily Show correspondent, stars as a fictionalised version of himself in a fictionalised account of his time as an international student.
The official press release tells us that show will follow Ronny throughout his first semester.
Meet Ronny Chieng, a student from Malaysia who arrives in Melbourne to study law. Ronny is smart, driven and competitive, so he’d be the perfect law student – if he actually wanted to be a lawyer.
Blunt, barbed and not afraid to cut to the point, it’s not long before Ronny is at odds with most of the people on campus – from the binge drinking Australians, to the Mah-jong playing Asians or the rich students who, in Ronnie’s words, dress like they’re captaining a yacht.
Molly Daniels will play Ronny’s “one true ally,” with Anthony Morgan and Patch May also in leading roles.
Here’s the trailer from ABC.
