Following a deal to acquire the IP, Apple TV will be producing at least two more seasons of hit Severance
Deadline reports Apple TV has paid an estimated $70 million for Severance from independent producer Fifth Season. The article notes this is similar to Apple TV’s deal for Silo with AMC. For those particularly interested in the finances of streaming, there’s a lot other detail lower down the article and a sense of just how decisions get made.
What else do we know apart from the two more seasons
There’s a lot of detail on costs to create the show, filming benefits and delayed payments. In the end the analysis seems to be Apple has far (and then some) deeper pockets than any independent and is able to smooth out costs over time. Fifth Season is reported as keeping an Executive Producer role. There’s also mention of the various titles Ben Stiller has in flight with Apple TV as well as Severance. The article goes to suggest at least four seasons for the show and the possibility of spinoffs. Perhaps at some point we’ll even work out what is actually going on! With a suggestion we might get season 3 as soon as this summer, it looks like we might not have long to wait. The lang gap between seasons 1 and 2 (partly due to various strikes) is cited as one of the factors which ment Fifth Season had trouble funding the show. That problem is now long gone.
We will, as ever, keep you posted on developments as we discover them.
