In the third instalment of Luther’s new series, DCI Luther is faced with a man committing acts of horrible brutality and wanton destruction, seemingly at random, while DS Gray becomes ever more concerned about the integrity of her superior officer. Meanwhile, Jenny’s attempts at reconciliation with Caroline go awry and Toby Kent’s metaphorical mask slips to reveal something decidedly unpleasant underneath.

» ‘I’m DCI John Luther. Question is: who are you?’
» ‘He lives with his mum – definitely a good sign in a man of 35.’
» ‘I’ve been hurt by animals a lot meaner than you.’
» ‘Better get canvassing: Nazis, nutters, the jugglers and the clowns…’
» ‘He’s been disappointingly tardy; more dial-up than broadband.’
» ‘I can’t help it; it’s the screams – they’re rather like watches. On one level, the fake ones are real enough – until you’ve tried the genuine article.’
» ‘I’ve been a police officer since God was a boy.’
» ‘When I was eight, they caught me interfering with the corpse of a cat.’
» ‘“Hello world! Hello neighbours! We’re Jenny and Caroline. We’re normal. Look how normal we are!”’
» ‘This is a spree – and it’s only just started.’
