The Mindy Project was created by Emmy Award-nominated writer/ producer and New York Times best-selling author Mindy Kaling, who as well as playing the lead role, is executive producer and writer for the show. The character of Mindy was inspired by Kaling’s own mother, an ob-gyn doctor.
Prior to The Mindy Project Kaling played Kelly Kapoor in The Office (U.S.) which she also wrote and produced for and was co-nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2010.
In 2013, Entertainment Weekly identified Kaling as one of the “50 Coolest and Most Creative Entertainers” in Hollywood. In the same year, Kaling was recognized by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Season One was nominated for Writers Guild of America Award for best New Series, People’s Choice Award for Favourite New TV Comedy and won The Writers Guild of America Award for Most Exciting New Series.
