Crazy Ex-Girlfriend recasts Greg; original actor responds

Greg Serrano is returning for the fourth and final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but Santino Fontana is not reprising the role. In his stead, the part has been recast, with Skylar Astin stepping into Serrano’s shoes.

Skylar Astin, who has previously been seen in Pitch Perfect, 21 & Over and Halt And Catch Fire, has Santino Fontana’s approval for taking over in the role. There certainly doesn’t seem to be any bad blood.

“I love Skylar! He’s a buddy of mine,” Fontana explained in an interview with Vulture. “We’ve been texting, we’ve got a whole back-and-forth going. We’re brothers from the same mother. That’s what I’m calling it. Brothers from the same mother.”

Fontana is set to star in a Broadway production of Tootsie, which offers one possible explanation as to why he isn’t returning to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Astin, if you were wondering, looks like this…

The show’s creators have promised that the recasting of Greg will make sense within the narrative. Writer and producer Aline Brosh McKenna said this to EW:

“Now bringing the character of Greg back, he is part of our storytelling. It’s a plot point in the story that the character is reimagined, so it’s going to be played by a different actor, which is Skylar.”

And Rachel Bloom, who plays Rebecca Bunch in the show, added this:

“It’s not only a big leap and feels experimental and playful like our show, but as we’ll see when the show airs, it’s a great statement on how our perception of people changes, and Greg is sort of a barometer for how Rebecca changes.”

The recasting of Greg will play into “the ideas and themes of perception, how he sees her, and how other people see each other”, Bloom added.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will return to The CW, over in the States, on October 12th. Netflix UK gets the episodes fairly quickly after their US debut.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
