We’re now in the twilight hours of the best superhero TV show since ordinary schoolboy Eric Wimp of 29 Acacia Road ate his first banana. Don’t feel sad, it’s time for a Storm anniversary party. A Stormiversary. And as an anniversary gift, you’re given everything you’d ask for in a perfect hour of Misfits (save perhaps for the return of Robert Sheehan).
There are outrageous powers, debauchery, knitwear, a filthy syringe-sharp script that continues to give depth and momentum to each member of the group and bring out top performances in the cast. And all of it soundtracked to some top Eighties hits. Bananaman never had that.
Last time there was a party there was a giant murderous rabbit. This time there’s a girl called Sarah, who’s inventive power we’re introduced to via some cheeky ‘Fnar-fnar’ camerawork. You can practically hear Sid James guffawing at her ‘hypnotic tits’. Hypnotits. And not even a powder blue mohair sweater can hold back the power of her mesmeric mammaries. Gent that he is, Alex fucks the power out of her.
But it turns out Ecstasy reverses your powers (remember kids, winners don’t do drugs), so while it causes Jess to go blind, and allows Abby to coax tortoise boyfriend Mark out of his shell, it does mean that the next time he enjoys nookie, Alex blows his load of powers right into Sarah, giving her every power he’s ever taken. And here’s where all those casual screws played just for laughs in previous episodes now Lego themselves into place. Not simply to create threat, but also a brilliant resolution, as Alex saves the day with just a banana by using Sarah’s accident-prone power against her.
Day saved, but plenty of damage done. Abby finally meets Tortoise Mark the Human only to see him turned inside out, which seems cruel even for this show; a blow softened only by the fact we wanted to see that power used ever since Alex fucked it out of its previous owner.
Rudy loses Finn as a mate after Finn finds out about his relationship with Jess, only then for Rudy to lose Jess over a prophetic pregnancy pullover. And even the Jumper Posse show signs of coming apart at the seams before they even begin, with brilliant performances from the Being Human ladies, Bracken and Kendrick.
So, a lot going on, and all of it excellent. Nothing less than the cast, the show, the audience deserve. And if we had just one problem with it – one upset in our TV tummyguts – it’s that this fun made us realise just how short Misfits’ time is, and how much we’ll miss it once it’s all just a hazy after-party memory.
