‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5’s best moments

Downton Abbey served up yet another delicious season, full of wit and charm, intrigue and insight, with a second helping of memorable one-liners from the Dowager Countess. Best of all, there was an explosive dining room scene in almost every episode.

With the Downton residents not returning until Christmas, here we take a look back at our favourite moments in Season 5…

 

Episode 1

Downton Abbey 5 4 Miss Bunting

We finally learn Miss Baxter’s deep, dark secret and almost get to see Lady Grantham realize that Mr. Barrow is up to no good.

Dinner party faux pas start on a small scale when Tom Branson brings Miss Bunting to a meal honouring Lord and Lady Grantham’s 34th wedding anniversary. Verbal fireworks – and indigestion – follow.

 

Episode 2

Downton Abbey 5 Edith

Mr. Drew concocts a plan that’s sure to please everyone (except his long-suffering wife) allowing Lady Edith to dote as Marigold’s Godmother.

The wireless comes to Downton Abbey and everyone – above and below stairs – gathers to hear the King’s speech.

Lady Mary takes Lord Gillingham for a test drive and finds him lacking.

Lord Merton proposes in the most dignified and touching manner.

Lady Mary breaks it off with Lord Gillingham, but it doesn’t sink in with him. Proving her point, we think.

Round 2 of the Bunting/Grantham fight. Lord G shouts, throws his napkin on the table, and storms out of the dining room. It just doesn’t get much better than this.
