‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5’s best moments

Posted Filed under

With the Downton residents not returning until Christmas, here we take a look back at our favourite moments in Season 5…

Episode 5

Downton Abbey 5 5 Rose

Lady Rose meets the handsome and implausibly smiley Atticus Aldridge – and we know she’s met her match.

Lord Grantham returns to Downton unexpectedly and finds Richard E Grant’s increasingly creepy Simon Bricker in Cora’s bedroom. Everyone comports themselves with decorum, except for the delightful interlude when Lord G backhands Bricker and wrestles him to the floor. Perhaps our  favourite scene in the entire season!

Episode 6

Downton Abbey 5 6 Thomas

Lady Edith finally takes Marigold and flees to London to start over as Michael Gregson’s heir and new owner of his publishing empire.

Mr. Barrow has been injecting himself with saline solution (with a non sterile needle!) in an attempt to ‘cure’ himself of his sexual orientation. He gets help from Miss Baxter and may have received a cure for his mean streak, in addition to treatment for an infection.

Episode 7

Downton Abbey 5 7 Isobel

Lord and Lady Grantham host another disastrous dinner party to introduce Isobel to Lord Merton’s ill-mannered sons. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Isis dies in a tender scene that cements the bond between Cora and Robert.

Episode 8

Downton Abbey 5 8 Bates

Lady Rose marries Atticus Aldridge in a registry office wedding, despite the conniving attempts of her mother, Lady Flintshire, to prevent it.

A Memorial is dedicated to the lives lost in the war, including a special remembrance for Mrs. Patmore’s nephew Archie.

Scotland Yard arrests Anna for the murder of Mr. Green, with Mr. Carson advising Mrs. Hughes to “take courage for their sake. We must always travel in hope.”

See you at Christmas!
