5. ‘The Reichenbach Fall’

The one key moment when Sherlock was a colossal cultural event, it wouldn’t surprise me if BBC One ran with a Sherlock-related headline that evening. Weaker moments of dialogue and plotting stand out on re-watch, but the first time seeing this will never fade in the memory as one of the most tense TV experiences ever.

 

4. ‘His Last Vow’

A trippy, bold, hallucinogenic episode from the Steven Moffat/Nick Hurran combo that goes on to deliver an even greater hit the following year, ‘His Last Vow’ is at times eccentrically paced but nonetheless punches high with its political commentary, its distinctive visuals and its skin-crawling villain, Charles Augustus Magnussen.

 

3. ‘The Sign of Three’

‘The wedding episode’, as surely everybody refers to it by now, is a surprisingly adept bit of writing that manages to be both a melee of interesting cases and deductions and a warm, almost rom-com-like portrayal of two friends, and does both brilliantly well.
