In Rogue One’s final battle, we get some Original Trilogy starfighter action in HD for the first time. And in a moment that shows the level of fanboy-ism present behind the scenes, we see Y-Wings using Ion weapons to disable a Star Destroyer.

The use of Ion weapons by X-Wings and Y-Wings against capital ships originally comes from the X-Wing and Rogue Squadron games and also plays a big role in the PC real-time strategy game Empire At War. Anyone who’s played as the Rebels will agree how useful the Y-Wing’s Ion Shot ability is against a shielded Star Destroyer. And Empire players will say the same, but slightly more annoyed,

We thought those final battles had a bit of an Empire At War feel to them, and it looks like that might have been the plan all along.
