6. “Not that obvious a trick.”
When Mary revealed herself as a talented markswoman in ‘His Last Vow’ and her true identity began to emerge from the façade she had so carefully built, she believed that only Sherlock was present.
But Mary had herself been deceived, and her worst fears were realised when it became apparent that John had heard every word.
5. “We can’t all three dance.”
Flashback to the closing scene of ‘The Sign of Three’, and newly married John and Mary have just performed their first dance as husband and wife. As the night’s revelry begins, Sherlock finds himself alone in the middle of a crowded room, surrounded by happy wedding guests.
The loneliness of his solitary figure among the groups of laughing, dancing friends is heart-wrenching, and it isn’t long before Sherlock quietly slips away to truly be alone.
4. “John Watson is definitely in danger…”
After his shooting, we get to see the inside of Sherlock’s mind palace – the space where Redbeard the childhood pet plays, the padded cell in which a chained Moriarty paces.
Most tellingly of all, we see Sherlock fighting his way back from the brink of death on a very familiar staircase – the one from ‘A Study in Pink’.
To untrained eyes, there’s nothing particularly special about this; but to those who know what to look for, this means everything. The staircase represents the first case Sherlock ever shared with John – and it shows that in the depths of his mind palace, John Watson is Sherlock’s lifeline.
