There is no real way to accurately portray the sense of joy and relief we feel when something we love ISN’T ruined over time.
Let’s be honest, 2009’s Back to Earth mini-series was smegging awful. No laughter track, a poor, ripped-off story and unconvincing CGI sets worked to drag down something that should’ve been a fantastic comeback.
So when it was announced that Dave was in the process of making a whole new, six-part series, fans around the world were sceptical to say the least. How wrong we were!
Trojan, the first episode in the new run of six, begins as any other. A slightly older Lister once again pondering the point of their existence whilst having a fantastically pointless conversation with the Cat about moose in Sweden has the audience instantly comfortable in the familiar.
Then in true Dwarf style, the crew stumble upon a derelict ship and a distress signal from none other than Rimmer’s hugely successful brother, Howard. Rimmer refuses to save until they’re equals, so finds himself once again determined to complete his Astro-navigation exam, despite failing it nine times.
Speaking at the Launch, Doug Naylor was asked whether any of the plot holes hanging over from Series 8, such as Kochanski’s disappearance or Rimmer’s second death (after kicking the Grim Reaper on the balls!) would be addressed. He teasingly replied that we may have a reveal or two to come, and that Rimmer’s death will come up.
Naylor has truly outdone himself this time around, resurrecting a show that has survived against a lot of odds, reuniting the original cast members (except Holly, who is presumably still drying out) and writing something that is in many ways funnier and just better than his early solo work with Series 7. Trojan really doesn’t disappoint.
