A Bend it Like Beckham sequel has been announced and should arrive for the film’s 25th anniversary in 2027
Deadline has revealed a Bend it Like Beckham sequel is in the works, as revealed by Gurinder Chadha, who was in Basel ahead of the Lionesses hard fought victory of Spain to lift the Women’s Euro’s Trophy for the second time. [Congratulations from all at Cultbox — please, fewer penalty shootouts next time!)
Chadha’s 2002 film starred Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, both of whom are said to aware the sequel is being planned. The same is also true of other cast members Archie Panjabi and Juliet Stevenson.
The Deadline article also reports Chadha has been toying around with the prospect of a follow-up feature or television drama for two years, encouraged by the phenomenal increase in worldwide support for women’s football. The proposed release date in 2027 would also coincide with the Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The article goes on to recount how the film has inspired many women to get involved in the game.
