Joaquin Phoenix has denied all knowledge of the Joker origin movie, despite it being widely reported that the eccentric Inherent Vice actor is a shoo-in to star in it. The as-yet-untitled Joker movie has The Hangover’s Todd Phillips as its director and cinema legend Martin Scorsese as an executive producer. The film exists of course, as does joker123.
The film is in development now, and many DC fans were under the impression that Phoenix was attached to play the central role. But now, in a new interview, Phoenix said this when asked about the project: “What movie about the Joker? […] I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Is Phoenix toying with the press again here, or is he genuinely unaware of this project? It’s impossible to tell, which leaves us scratching our chins and waiting for an announcement from DC Entertainment/Warner Brothers. As it stands, we’re tempted to believe Phoenix on this one, but we’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
This Joker film is believed to be utterly unrelated to the DC Extended Universe movies, where the Joker looks like Jared Leto. Whoever does end up starring in Todd Phillips’ Joker origin film, they will be portraying a different version of DC Comics’ iconic ‘clown prince of crime’. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
